Russian Name: Михаил Бенедиктович Кугель
Born: December 5, 1946
State/country of origin: Ukraine

Known for: playing the viola and composing music in Eastern Europe.

Michael Kugel was born in Kharkov, Ukraine and attended the Beethoven School
of Music and later studied at Leningrad Conservatory. At the International
Viola Competition in Budapest, Michael won First Prize. For fifteen
years, Michael
Kugel was the soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic Organization, violist of the Beethoven Quartet and professor at the Moscow
Conservatory
. Kugel was the professor at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance for
six years between 1990 and 1996. Kugel is the founder and the
president of the Belgian Viola Society. Not only does he play the viola, Kugel plays
the viola d’amore. Currently, Michael takes part in festivals, concerts, and master classes around the world.

CDs: Couldn’t find any, although I know he has some.

Compositions: Sonata-Poem for viola solo, Concerto for viola and
orchestra, Suite
in memoriam Shostakovich for viola and piano, a couple others.
