Born in Los Angeles, California
Classical Double Bass Virtuoso and Teacher

Gary Karr started his career as a young performer, making his debut on the nationally televised New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert in 1962, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. He performed a solo piece, “The Swan” from the carnival of the animals. Since this inception of his bass playing life he has been featured on six continents with orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Simon Bolivar Orchestra (Caracas, Venezuela), Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony, and with all the major orchestras of Australia, playing solo pieces.
Karr has taught bass lessons at several prestigious universities, such as Julliard School, Yale University, New England Conservatory, North Carolina School of the Arts and Indiana University. He eventually retired to Victoria, BC in 2001 and currently lives with his dog after 40 years of solo performance.
